Teen Theatre Brings Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT to Thomaston Opera House – Aug. 8-10
Punk’s not dead – at least not on the Thomaston Opera House stage! This August 8th, 9th, and 10th, the Landmark Student Theatre Teen Program brings to life the two-time Tony Award (R) winning hit musical, AMERICAN IDIOT. Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award (R) winning seventh album, the musical follows the stories of three long-term friends, Johnny (Justin Torres, Torrington), Tunny (Zachary Geiger, New Hartford), and Will (Tyler Holm, New Milford), as they come of age in a post 9/11 world, searching for their
sense of self as they choose between the safety of the community they grew up in, or chasing their dreams.
This show, though it deals with difficult subject matter, is “the perfect narrative for our generation,” says director, Rhiannon Carta (Bristol). “While the teens might not be facing these kinds of issues in their day-to-day life, the reality is that all of them know someone who is. This is the world we live in. Everyone feels like they’re alone, and they have no idea how much they have in common with each other.”
The teen program, going into its seventh year, often strives to produce shows that many high schools and teen programs shy away from due to their mature content. Recent productions include, The Who’s Tommy , Sweeney Todd , and Heathers the Musical . This year, the production staff, while supervised by established director, Foster Reese (Artistic Director), is composed of three alumni of the program; Rhiannon Carta (Director and Choreographer), Tori Campbell (Production Designer), and Sydney Wyatt (co-Stage Manager).
AMERICAN IDIOT runs for one weekend only: August 8th, 9th, and 10th at 8pm. Tickets are $15, $12 for students and seniors. It is recommended for audiences 16 and older, due to sensitive language and mature themes.
